I just want you to know that I am a fanatic of steampunk jewelery, and thus I like this piece you've made. However, I'm criticizing this through hollistic judgement because I want to be fair and honest with this piece without my personal bias.
I regards to overall vision I can see that it turned out splendid. There is a good use of balance, and no parts of the heart are outweighed in terms of design. It's a simple design, nothing too sophisticated or complicated. But that's the thing, steampunk art is more inclined to over-embellishment, and this piece is just too simple for most steampunk fans.
Originality: you've done 48 steampunk hearts already, and so have many other people on deviantART. I do like the use of walnut though. It is diverse from using scraps, polymers, and just gluing on gears. It isn't a bad thing to have a line of steampunk hearts, because everyone likes that. Its not original though.
I'm not sure if you carved the hear shape out of walnut wood yourself, if you did then that's a great example of technique. The copper a gears are embedded into the wood with expertise, and the adhesives used are almost nonexistent. In regards to steampunkery technique, it could use a few more gears, a bit of rusting, or whatever. The gear cutting to fit on the heart is finely done, with attentive precision.
In all honesty, this piece doesn't impact me because its not complicated enough for my taste. When I see a steampunk heart, I see the purview of the artist's beliefs of what the heart symbolizes; mostly its how convoluted the emotional structure is for an individual. If anything, I see an interpretation of the heart being a simple contraption, nothing difficult to understand. That's me trying to give it meaning though. Aesthetic interest is the main impact I get from this piece though. I do like this piece, but it just isn't as impressive as other pieces on deviantART.
Overall, I'd say this piece is decent. It's not an amazing piece steampunk-wise, but its still something worth buying. Not everyone is in to over-embellishment on jewelery.
